Twelve terrorists and Afghan Taliban personnel were killed and a soldier embraced martyrdom as security forces foiled an attempted infiltration from Afghanistan into the Kurram district, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) stated on Sunday. The movement of the group attempting to approach the international border was detected on October 10, prompting security forces to effectively engage them, according to the military's media wing.

According to Geo News and the ISPR, security forces faced firing from Afghan Taliban posts that supported the infiltration attempt. Skilled and precise engagement by vigilant troops resulted in the casualties. However, 40-year-old Naib Subedar Hidayat Aman, a resident of Ghizer district, lost his life during the intense exchange of fire.

Background

The ISPR stated that the incident along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border vindicates Pakistan's stance regarding the Afghan Taliban regime's failure to prevent terrorist organisations from using Afghan soil, alleging the regime patronises cross-border terrorism. The military noted that the Afghan Taliban regime has consistently failed to fulfil its international counter-terrorism obligations.

This development follows an intelligence-based operation (IBO) two days prior in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's North Waziristan district, where forces killed seven Fitna al-Khawarij terrorists and destroyed several hideouts, as reported by the ISPR under the Azm-e-Istehkam vision.

According to data compiled by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), Pakistan recorded a sharp rise in cross-border terrorist incidents since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021. PICSS reported that September 2026 saw the highest monthly number of militant attacks in 12 years, with 225 attacks recorded nationwide compared to 199 in August, marking a 13% increase and the third consecutive month of rising attacks.

Why it matters

The ongoing security situation highlights the persistent challenges along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and the continued efforts of law enforcement agencies to counter foreign-sponsored terrorism under the Azm-e-Istehkam vision approved by the Federal Apex Committee on the National Action Plan. The security forces' counter-terrorism campaign continues as authorities work to eliminate remaining threats and safeguard national frontiers.
