An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot a man inside a car with a five-year-old child in the Marble Hill neighbourhood of New York City, according to Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Early reports indicated that federal agents surrounded the vehicle before discharging multiple rounds, prompting the mayor to describe the event as an unconscionable situation.

According to Al Jazeera, Mayor Mamdani announced he had contacted President Donald Trump to demand an end to all ICE enforcement actions in the city, stating on social media that he would not stand by while communities are terrorised.

The Department of Homeland Security stated, as reported by Al Jazeera, that ICE officers were conducting a targeted enforcement operation in the Bronx at approximately 4:00 PM to arrest a Dominican national with a criminal conviction. During the operation, an officer discharged a weapon and injured the man.

The New York Police Department reported that the injured man remained conscious and received medical treatment at a nearby hospital, according to Al Jazeera's coverage.

Background

Al Jazeera reported that this shooting follows months of mounting criticism directed at federal immigration agencies. In January, federal immigration agents shot and killed two United States citizens in Minneapolis: Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, and Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse. Following those incidents, federal officials removed local authorities from investigations, rejected calls for civil rights probes, and deployed hundreds of additional agents to Minnesota as protests spread across hundreds of US cities.

Al Jazeera noted that President Trump blamed shifts in American public opinion on unfair media coverage, urging the Department of Homeland Security and ICE to publicise the records of arrested individuals. ICE currently has a target of one million deportations per year, operates with more than 22,000 agents following a doubling in size, and remains the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency with an allocation of approximately $75bn over four years under a tax bill signed by President Trump last year.
