Digital financial services in Pakistan experienced a remarkable surge as JazzCash and its related businesses reported a 67.6 percent year-on-year increase in revenue, touching Rs43.4 billion for the third quarter ending September 30, 2026. According to a report by Business Recorder, the impressive financial growth was driven by expanding digital transactions, increased lending activities, and VEON's broader consolidation within the country's telecom and financial markets through a USD240 million spectrum acquisition and the takeover of TPL Insurance.
The latest financial results published by VEON highlighted that the Pakistan financial services segment—which includes JazzCash, Mobilink Microfinance Bank (MMBL), and JazzSure—achieved a net profit of Rs6.8 billion during the period, as cited by Business Recorder. Furthermore, the publication noted that profit before tax experienced a sharp 296.8 percent jump, reaching Rs8.9 billion.
Background
Business Recorder reported that the business generated a gross transaction value (GTV) of Rs6.9 trillion, marking a 79.2 percent increase compared to the Rs3.86 trillion recorded during the same quarter last year. This upward trajectory reflected a wider public adoption of digital payments, peer-to-peer money transfers, and merchant services. Branchless banking accounts saw a 21.6 percent growth, totaling 65 million, while quarterly active customers rose by 15.6 percent to 30.4 million. Additionally, overall transaction volumes grew by 72.8 percent, and the average number of transactions executed by each active customer advanced by 53.5 percent.
The merchant network also witnessed extensive expansion, with active merchants surging 121.9 percent to 957,100, up from 431,300 in the preceding year, while the overall merchant base neared the two million mark by September 2026, according to Business Recorder. Payments and transaction revenue specifically climbed 67.8 percent.
Why it matters
The expansion of digital platforms and microfinance services highlights a rapid shift in how financial transactions are conducted across Pakistan. The widespread adoption of branchless banking accounts and the substantial increase in active merchants demonstrate a growing reliance on digital payment systems for daily commerce and money transfers, pointing to broader changes in the nation's financial landscape.
