When millions of units of electricity vanish into unauthorized lines, the burden inevitably falls back on honest consumers striving to keep their lights on. Business Recorder reported that the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) uncovered 1,428 separate incidents of power pilferage across its operational circles during the month of October 2026.
According to statistics released by the LESCO headquarters and cited by Business Recorder, the detected theft involved a total of 1,932,870 electricity units with a monetary value of Rs116.19 million. Out of these violations, 1,418 involved domestic connections, while the remainder comprised six agricultural, three industrial, and one commercial connection. Business Recorder noted that the utility's enforcement teams successfully recovered Rs9.98 million during the month under review.
Background
Power theft remains a persistent challenge for utility providers striving to secure energy networks. In its efforts to counter these losses, LESCO submitted applications for the registration of 1,331 cases against individuals allegedly involved in electricity theft, according to Business Recorder. However, authorities registered 545 FIRs and arrested five suspects during the month. Geographically, Eastern Lahore emerged with the highest number of recorded incidents at 778, resulting in 336 registered FIRs from 684 submitted applications. Other areas also reported significant numbers, including 237 cases in Okara, 123 in Central Lahore, 97 in Northern Lahore, 95 in Sheikhupura, 39 in Kasur, 38 in Nankana Sahib, and 21 in Southern Lahore, as detailed by Business Recorder.
Why it matters
Energy pilferage directly impacts the broader economic stability of the power sector and strains infrastructure meant to serve legitimate consumers. While LESCO Chief Executive Officer Engr Ramzan Butt has directed relevant departments to strengthen anti-theft operations and continue indiscriminate action against offenders, the sheer volume of detected cases highlights the ongoing difficulties in completely eradicating unauthorized power consumption across urban and rural circles.
