A staggering investment target of nearly two trillion rupees aims to completely reshape farming practices across Punjab through modern technologies and value addition. According to Business Recorder, the provincial administration is pursuing Rs1.995 trillion in investments alongside USD6.8 billion in additional exports and more than 162,000 direct jobs.
Business Recorder reported that these sweeping goals form the backbone of the region's flagship agricultural transformation initiative. Sardar Usama Fayyaz Leghari, the Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture for Punjab, detailed the objectives during the closing ceremony of a five-day international workshop in Lahore, as cited by Business Recorder. The event, which ran from November 2 to 6, 2026, was jointly organised by the National Productivity Organization of Pakistan and the Asian Productivity Organization of Japan, bringing together delegates from multiple member economies.
Background
Business Recorder noted that the international workshop served as a platform for international delegates to explore methods for boosting agricultural productivity, reinforcing value chains, and driving sustainable growth. According to the same outlet, Mr. Leghari stressed during his address that escalating climate pressures, severe water shortages, and post-harvest losses necessitate an immediate transition toward resource-efficient, market-driven farming methods. The publication also highlighted that the broader Punjab Innovation for Value, Opportunity and Transformation (PIVOT) initiative, spanning 2026 to 2029, includes plans to set up dedicated agro-processing parks in Sargodha, Khanewal, and Okara.
Why it matters
As reported by Business Recorder, the future of the sector relies heavily on converting raw agricultural commodities into competitive, value-added goods rather than merely increasing raw production. For ordinary citizens and workers, these structural shifts and the establishment of new agro-processing hubs represent potential avenues for job creation, modernized supply chains, and greater economic resilience against climate and resource challenges.
