Background

The weekly data published by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics captures short-term price fluctuations across a basket of 51 essential consumer goods. The latest figures follow a previous weekly reading where the Sensitive Price Index dipped by 0.35 percent, according to Business Recorder. On an annual basis, the Year-on-Year trend indicates an overall inflation increase of 12.31 percent, which the data attributes primarily to a sharp escalation in Liquefied Petroleum Gas prices.

Why it matters

For ordinary households navigating weekly grocery expenses, the simultaneous rise in daily kitchen items like tomatoes, potatoes, and cooking gas directly impacts living standards. Even as fuel costs such as petrol and diesel registered declines during the week, the heavier financial burden of essential food items and household fuel shapes the immediate purchasing power of consumers across Pakistan.
